“…(the gatekeepers) were responsible for guarding the thresholds of the tent…” 1 Chronicles 9:19

“The gatekeepers had been assigned to their positions of trust by David and Samuel the seer. They and their descendants were in charge of guarding the gates of the house of the Lord—the house called the tent of meeting.” 1 Chronicles 9:22-23

We are given positions of ‘trust’ and called to guard the temple of God, to not neglect the House of God. Today, we are the House of God, where He has chosen to dwell, within His people. There were many other duties for those guarding the temple, they were also given responsibilities to the rooms and treasuries, charge of the articles used for the temple service, take care of the furnishing and all other articles, flour, wine, oil, incense and spices, the mixing of spices, baking the offering bread, preparing for every Sabbath the bread set out on the table, musicians who were responsible for their duties day and night, and lived inside the rooms of the temple.

All our lives, everything about us, points towards a God who makes a dwelling in us, what we keep in the rooms of our mind, the things and people we treasure are in there too, the objects and articles we use for daily life, the music and lifestyle of worship we lead, day in and day out, how we guard the temple and station ourselves around this precious place, all of these matter to God who dwells in us. What can we say to a God who chooses to show His trust and love by keeping us in charge of His dwelling place?

“They would spend the night stationed around the house of God, because they had to guard it; and they had charge of the key for opening it each morning.” 1 Chronicles 9:27

A beautiful thing God also does, is give us charge of the key for opening the temple each morning. When we rise each morning, He allows us to open up our hearts freely, whom we let into our temple is our free will decision.

Today as we worship our Lord and Savior, let us clean up and rid ourselves of every other article and treasure that sets itself above God, and open up our temple to let Him into our hearts in a powerful new submission. We who are called to lead His people to worship, need also to raise up such an offering that the keys of the temples of those we lead will also open up to the God that we serve.

May God lead us, as a people, into this powerful submission in His presence as we worship today, and give us a grander portion of His grace to build up our temple, our lives on His Love, His truth and His Spirit.
