The Night of the Lord !
Ex. 12: 42, ‘’It is a [k]night of solemn observance to the Lord for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. This is that night of the Lord, a solemn observance for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.’’
After about 400 years of slavery, the Israelites were finally delivered. Their deliverance came in a midnight. The Lord judged the Egyptians and redeemed His people. Before the morning appeared, even the Red sea retuned to its strength after giving way to God’s people. We have often heard about things which the Lord did during midnight hours and the importance of praying at midnight. Though, we do not see a concrete literal explanation for this in the Scriptures, let us learn about few important things that happened during midnight.
Redeemed at midnight : After sending nine plagues, it was seen that the heart of Pharaoh hardened again and again after each plague. He made decisions to let the Israelites go and then changed it again and again. The Lord then sent the 10th plague. This time He assured Moses that His people would be set free from the yoke of Pharaoh through this plague. All the nine earlier plagues were sent during the day time. But this one was during the midnight. Ex.11:4, ‘’ Then Moses said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt;..’’ That night the Israelites were instructed to mark the upper and 2 side posts of their homes with the blood of lambs without blemish for their protection from the angel of death. Literally speaking, that night, the Israelites were all awake the whole night for they were supposed to eat the flesh of the slain lamb roasted in fire and nothing was to be leftover by the morning. On the other hand the Egyptians were all asleep that night.
Ex.12:29, ‘’And it came to pass at midnight that the Lord struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was [h]in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of livestock. The Lord judged the Egyptians that night in such a way that they feared the Lord greatly. Ex.12:30, ‘’So Pharaoh rose in the night, he, all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was not a house where there was not one dead.’’ Ex.12:31, ‘’ Then he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, “Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel. And go, serve the Lord as you have said. ‘’ That very night the Israelites were set free to leave Egypt. The freedom to worship and serve the living God came in a midnight.
Hearts of the kings touched and moved in midnight : Esther 6:1, ‘’That night [a]the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king. ‘’ The Jews were facing a great challenge and their lives were threatened. Queen Esther had fasted and prayed for three days along with all the Jews of that land. And the course of this wicked plan took a sharp turn when the king lost his sleep and was reminded of the kind act done by Mordecai as per the records of chronicles. The answers to the tearful prayers started manifesting in midnight in the king’s heart. The wicked plans plotted against the righteous souls started breaking in the midnight.
Worship and great deliverance in midnight : Acts 16 : 25, ‘’But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.’’ We know the consequence. There was a great earthquake and foundations of the prison was shaken. All the doors were opened and everyone’s bands were loosed. The jailor and his family got saved that very night. Gift of salvation was received in lives in midnight hours. The apostles were tired after the day’s ministry and the persecution, but instead of sleeping, they chose to praise God. Being able to pray and worship for some time in midnight hours is a sign of spiritually being awake. When one is fervent in watching over one’s soul and the souls of many whom we are concerned about, he or she spends some time in midnight to pray and intercede for same.
The payment of the price for redemption of mankind began in a midnight. Jesus shed great drops of blood at midnight . Lk.22:44, ‘’ And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.” The first drops of the holy blood of Christ Jesus were shed on this earth at midnight in the garden of Gethsemane. The Word says that our redeemer paid His blood as a price to redeem us and it began in a midnight. This shedding of the Holy blood continued till He was crucified and gave up His life. The sacrifice of the lamb of God began in a midnight.
All night in prayer : Lk.6:12, ‘’Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.’’ Jesus was God and man at the same time. Being a man, He did need rest, but often He spent nights in prayer. Jesus, being our only perfect example surely had to say something though this act.
Midnights are the times when our bodies rest, and minds tend to sleep. This is the time when most of the people sleep. But a person who prays for some time at night is active in the spiritual realm. He or she releases words of faith and power in fervent prayers that cuts the powers of darkness coming against His children in the spiritual realm. The inner person of such lives are stronger. Jesus asked His disciples Peter, James and John to watch and pray with Him at night so that they would not fall into temptation. He knew that they were tired and sleepy . Yet He urged them to watch and pray. Midnight prayers help to resist temptations in a more effective way. They tend to strengthen the inner man which in turn helps to resist sin.
Ps.121:4 says that the Lord who keeps Israel neither sleeps nor slumbers. A mother often gets up during the night to just have a look over her sleeping kids. It shows a concerned heart. Even though night is a time to rest, it is also a time when thieves tend to creep into forbidden areas. The storms came against the disciples in the boat during midnight. Faith was tested during the night time. Or else in other words, when our faith is tested, it’s the night time of our lives. A praying life watches over one’s soul, family and concerned issues in prayer in the stillness and silence of the night.
Night times are the best times to be more focused and sharp in prayers. Few minutes of midnight prayers are of great worth in the sight of God for they mark great sacrifices in one’s prayerful life. Jacob wrestled with the angel in prayer all night. It showed his determination to pray till he was blessed. In Ex.27:20, we see the Lord commanding the lamp in the temple to be kept burning day and night in all generations. Today, we being His temple need to burn to spread the light of gospel at all times. Only such burning lamps can keep away the darkness at all times.
The great deeds of the Lord during the midnight hours simply shows that His works and doings are not restricted to time boundaries. Similarly, He expects His children to be fruitful in both the daytime and night time of their lives. A person who is spiritually awake and watchful does not restrict his or her responsibilities towards God to time boundaries, which in turn shows the complete submission. Such lives are well rooted in Christ. They are sensitive to the guidance of the Holy Spirit and are able to response in a better way. We see this in lives of Jesus and also in His apostle’s lives. In the same way, let us be spiritually fruitful in all times and in turn, let’s expect great things from the Lord at all times.

There are times when life is overwhelming, when all we have is questions. In those moments, hope can feel far away. The great thing about prayer is that it shifts our perspective toward the One who stands ready to listen. No matter what you’re facing, we’d love to pray with you!
