The high call of Gideon

Judges 6:11-24

This is a night where God is going to speak specifically to all of us!

Gideon was called as a judge during the time where Israelites were going through very tensed situations! People were suffering a lot. In verse 6 we can see that they were impoverished! That means there was nothing to be hoped inside them. Everything was in a kind of end of the road. It is a time of giving up, everything seems to end.

Even though they know that they are Godly people, they know that the Lord has sent them, they know that they are led by the Holy Spirit, they know God is with them but still because of the troubles what they faced they feel like this is the end of the road. In the junction, they feel nothing is going to be in favour. But the message for you tonight is: Our God is God who is so loving!

And in verse 7 it says: And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the LORD because of the Midianites, that the LORD sent a prophet.

The Lord brought you to hear with one single purpose and that purpose is to convey a message to you. There are times we feel that we are on downtimes, there are times that we feel we are lost, there are times that we feel our prayers are not been heard, there are times we feel no one is there to help us in this journey but do you know how God is loving us this evening time? He sends his prophet to speak unto us.

Tonight the Lord is going to prophetically minister to you. It is not because you are holy, it is not because you are perfect, it is not because you are so much close to God, it is not because you are worthy for a prophet to visit you but still when God has seen your cry, when God has seen your tears, when God has heard your voice, he says I cannot stay in heaven what I do is I visit you!

In verse 10 it says: Also I said to you, “I am the LORD your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not obeyed My voice.”

God says even though you haven’t heard my voice still I am ready to visit you. How many of you can see the mercy of God? Even though you disobey, even though you are not doing right, even though you are in a wrong road but the lord says I am still with you, I am still visiting you, I am still going to do a miracle for you.

God is not looking into your holiness; God has his way of measurement of holiness. Even though you are not coming under his category of holiness God says he is still going to visit you.

Before God gives you a victory, he sends his messenger to you. When God does some miracle for you, what he does is before he does a miracle he sends a messenger of God to you to speak. Why God does that?

God does that because God wants you to stand still to receive the promises what is about to happen. If your mind is not settled to receive god’s promise, God cannot move with his promise and that is why he sends his prophet that your mind will be settled to handle the promises of God.

What God does is

  1. He sends his prophet
  2. The battle belongs to the Lord

Before you go through the battle, God will raise someone humanly to stand for you. God said I am going to give you a prophet to prophesy over you, not just that, after the prophecies are given I am going to raise a man of God to be with you, to fight the battle for you. Since long you are suffering, you are going through a lot of pain and persecution, but the Lord says the battle belongs to the lord and the victory is given to us.

According to the word of God every prophet should follow these three steps what we see in the scripture.

A prophet is not a person who predicts your future. A prophet is a person who will minister to you to remind you from where you came and he will remind you what are you going through now and he will say what is about to happen in the future.

Verse 8, 9 & 10: that the LORD sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondage; 9 and I delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians and out of the hand of all who oppressed you, and drove them out before you and gave you their land. 10 Also, I said to you, “I am the LORD your God; do not fear the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell.” But you have not obeyed My voice.’”

God says I brought you up from Egypt that speaks about the past. God says even though you where my children still you were having bondages. You were bonded by someone, something, some spirit. God says I have brought you out of the Egyptians. God says I am the Lord your God, that speaks about the present condition. God says you changed in between but I am your God. You took a wrong connection in the journey; you took different gods in the journey. When you were praying to god, nothing was working according to your plan and you wanted instant answers. Even other gods cannot change your situations. Only our God has the power to change any situation and even the other gods know it!

Other gods may just read the signs and tell you what is going on but cannot have the power to change the situation. Do not take short cuts in your journey. Your short cuts won’t sustain you for a long time. Your short cuts are short-term cuts but it will not take you to the long term of your future but God says wait unto me until I answer, clear all the paths that you have to clear, obey all the things I spoke to you. God says I am still your God. He is ready to help you.

In verse 7, we can see that they cried. It does not mean they are so much into God and cried, the word cry there meant because of the torture they suffered. The word that is mentioned there is a human cry. Moreover, to your life tonight some of you are crying very badly, some of you are praying with word plays because you know that you love God, you know that you want God but still, you are not able to connect with him because of your wrongdoings.

You are so much tortured by the surrounding, now you do not have anyone to help you that’s why you just simply cry but God waited for 250 years. In the book of judges when Gideon was ministering in this chapter, it was almost speaking about 250 year’s story. 40 years they took to reach the promised land now almost 200 years, 200 years in the promised land but still they are not being blessed in the promised land. You are in the promised land but still, you are not being blessed in the Promised Land, why? Because there are certain rooms that you need to be cleared, God says I waited and waited and waiting but still you could not respond to me but seeing your cry our God is so merciful.

Because of your cry, he is walking to you telling you I am still merciful, even though you are not praying in a right way still I am ready to help you because I cannot see you cry anymore.

Here comes a man Gideon. Therefore, God sent a prophet and now to work the promise God needs a man. To speak to us he needs a prophet and does the ministry he needs a man, and God searched everywhere in the camp of Israel and found a man whose name is Gideon. The meaning of the name Gideon is ‘He who cuts down’.

Where is he now? Many of us are like Gideon have a high call but you are hiding. You have a high call but still looking around, and you predict that nothing will be in favour because looking unto the past years that nothing worked in favour, so you end with a conclusion by telling this will be the end of everything. A man, who has a high call, is still hiding because of his surrounding! Around you, you have seen many negatives and still because of that, you feel negative. God says can you see God in midst of that negatives. God says there are his promises in you. There is a prophetical word that God had spoken to you that his words are yes and yes forever. He never changes his words. He is the same yesterday, today and forever!

*4 different situations that Gideon went through!* (Judges 6-7)

  1. Circumstances of Gideon.

Even though Gideon had a high call, Gideon’s circumstance was not in favour.

What was his circumstance?

In verse 4-6, we see the circumstances of Gideon.

  1. a) It was a time of poverty.

Many people like Gideon ask themselves that if I have a high call, why I am suffering in poverty! Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we go to the depths of suffering or poverty.

Now the biggest question, if I am a child of God how can this poverty come. Will God allow?

God will not allow poverty to anyone unless you give a chance for Satan. Suffering, poverty is a part of Christian life but there are times that we go in the depth of poverty, it is because we allow Satan to come in our life.

In verse 10, we see they were disobeying God and God was not with them.

The label you have is that you are the child of God, you still say we are called as Israel but still you are not obeying God, still you are working in your and ways and not in his ways and because of that many struggles you are going through but this evening time look into the poverty what they had. Verse 3-6 it says the biggest problem every year they used to face when they tried to cultivate something. When Satan comes, he came from the three sides. Midianites are coming, Amalekites are coming, and the people for the east are coming, you know when the devil plans even though they all are separate teams when it comes to playing against a child of God they all become one.

In verse 4 we see they are doing their best for something to eat, not to earn something but to eat something. We see in the below verse everything was taken from them. Everything was destroyed and taken off. When the devil comes, we feel as if locust had come to eat and squeeze us. They were going through poverty and that is why we see that Gideon when he was desperate about the enemy, he was desperate about the people who were coming to destroy him, what he did was, he had a little wheat in his house. The little wheat he had was a little deposit he stored for the livelihood. Therefore, he bought it for the vine press.

The vine press was actually behind his house where nobody could see him and he was not having a big amount to take it to the place where he had to get the stock. He was not ready to go there but he was ready to be behind his house where the vine press was there and he was hiding because he never had a big amount of wheat to do it, he only had a little portion of the wheat and that speaks about his poverty what he is going through.

  1. b) It was a time of persecution

The persecution that was hurting their heart. Everything that they did, the people always came and destroyed them. They could not see hope for tomorrow. Nothing was working out for them. Even a small portion of grain even that also the Midianites used to take. That was showing about the persecution they were going through.

  1. c) It was a time of powerlessness.

Even though he was known as a judge in that time but still he was not able to use his power. He feels he is powerless. He was feeling so low, he was feeling as he did not have the strength to fight the battle, he feels he is about to die, he feels he is about to give up. The circumstances are in very much in trouble for him now. Everything was working against him but amid these circumstances, God had a purpose for Gideon’s life. Even whatever your circumstance is God has a commission upon your life. Even though your circumstances are in poverty, persecution, powerlessness but still God reminds you that he has a commission upon you

  1. Commission of Gideon.

Verse 12 and 13: And the Angel of the LORD appeared to him, and said to him, “The LORD is with you, you mighty man of valour!”13 Gideon said to Him, “O my lord, if the LORD is with us, why then has all this happened to us?

It says the LORD was with him. When God has a commission, He has a promise! When God calls you, He does not look at your current situation but looks at your future! Now how can God call him a mighty man of Valor, when he is hiding behind his house, he is scared of the Midianites, he is scared of the situation. But see unto God, he doesn’t call your name seeing at the current situation but calls your name seeing out your future.

We see not only in this place, but the pre-incarnation of Christ is also mentioned in the old testament.

Christ was born on Bethlehem, but in the old testament to the Christ revelation was very clear and it was visible in the old testament and one of the verses for the proving is verse 12 which says: And the Angel of the Lord appeared to him, and said to him, “The Lord is with you, you mighty man of valour!”

We see here the Theophany of God.

“Theophany”- Appearance of God in the visible form.

And moreover if we go little more in-depth it is not just Theophany, it is Christophany. Which is the actual revelation about Christ himself revealing to Gideon.

Even though Christ couldn’t reveal fully himself and even Gideon doesn’t know this is Christ but still, the revelation was from Christ.

Theophany is the appearance of God who is invisible to be in a visible format and “Christophany” is the Appearance of Christ revealing himself to those people.

Christ was seen in so many places in the Old Testament like in:

Genesis 3:8 – To Adam and Eve

Genesis 18 – To Abraham

Genesis 16 – To Hager

Genesis 32 – To Jacob

Exodus 3- Christ visited Moses at the burning bush

Numbers 22- when the donkey started to speak

Joshua 5: 13-15 – Joshua at Jericho

Judges 13-To Samson

There is much evidence in the old testament that speaks about the appearance of Christ in a visible format. Even though in the old testament he was invisible but there are people he visited and said I am there to support you.

We have promised more than the people in the old testament.

Hebrews 13: 5: Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He, Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

When God wants to send his angle for his work, he sends an angel but all the scripture we went through now wherever the Christophany was revealed that was purely showing that man was out of control, no one was there to help him and support him, when he was about to go out of his situation God has sent his son so the manifestation of Christ will be seen to those people. And now when we see this verse to those people if Christ has revealed in that way how much he is revealing to us.

God says I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU NOR FORSAKE YOU. It is not to some people. In the Old Testament, not everyone could experience God but the beauty of the new testament, it is not to some people rather it is to the entire people here. Christ is ready to reveal himself to you. He is ready to start a new life with you.

God has a perception that is different from ours. There are things we say we cannot do but He says you can do it! If God’s promise is with you, it will happen! Whatever be your situation never predict your future because God has already predicted my future and it is in His custody! My perception can be wrong but God’s perception is correct.

  1. Confusion of Gideon.
  2. a) He questions Gods presence.

The first question he asks God in Verse 13 God if you were with me then where was your presence?

  1. b) He questions Gods performance.

The second question he asks if God was with me where was his performance? He says I haven’t seen any miracle for 250 years. Does he ask what is the benefit of going on? Are you performing?

  1. c) He questions Gods perception

Gideon questions God why he is going through what he is going through if God is with him? Gideon perception with a confusion question, if the LORD is with me then why this defeat is coming? And we all have this same question just as Gideon had.

Remember, If you ask a negative question to God, it affects your faith!

Looking unto the past can you predict your future??

Look at the life of Abraham, he came to faith and can you give him any marks from his past? But God has called him faithful and father of nations.

Look unto the life of Jacob, a big lair later God called him as the father of Israel. Joseph was a slave but he was one who saved the world. Moses was a shepherd, a murderer but delivered six hundred thousand people. Esther was actually on a slave position, nothing was there to boost in her life but she was the one who delivered Israel.

Mathew was a tax collector, he never had any right to write about the King of Jews but still, God allowed him. Saul of Tarsus, he was actually against the people of God but still he was the one who took time to write half of the new testament.

Looking unto your surrounding and life, you cannot predict your future but God says you have a high call!

  1. Confirmation of Gideon
  2. a) He was confirmed by a presentation.
  3. b) He was confirmed by a promise.

Gideon had so many questions, he was fighting with God. He wanted God every time to prove, that’s why we see later he said let me prepare something, he went back home and took a portion of flour and he prepared a meal and bought to the presence of God to offer it as a sacrifice.

Do you know what God did? God told I will wait for you. God waited for Gideon to come back. God said even this place will be remembered as the place of Shalom, the place of peace. God said I am with you.

Even though you ask so many questions, God says He will wait and answer you. Nevertheless, will you respond to his high call? The battle is his; let him take away your confusion. Can you say, God has a commission upon me, God has a confirmation upon me? Can you take a step forward?

Take a decision, I am taking a step forward, everything seems to be closed, nothing is working in the plan you want, but are you ready to take off all the confusion and all the questions and all that is negative. And allow the holy spirit to take control. Your call is so heavy. You have a high call.

Genesis 47:1-4 New International Version (NIV) 47 Joseph went and told Pharaoh, “My father and brothers, with their flocks and herds and everything they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in Goshen.” 2 He chose five of his brothers and presented them before Pharaoh.

3 Pharaoh asked the brothers, “What is your occupation?” “Your servants are shepherds,” they replied to Pharaoh, “just as our fathers were.” 4 They also said to him, “We have come to live here for a while, because the famine is severe in Canaan and your servants’ flocks have no pasture. So now, please let your servants settle in Goshen.”
