Out of lion’s den

Daniel 6: 23, ‘’ Now the king was exceedingly glad for him, and commanded that they should take Daniel up out of the den. So Daniel was taken up out of the den, and no injury whatever was found on him, because he believed in his God.’’

The Word says that nothing happens in our lives without His knowledge, and that all things happen for good for those who love the Lord. Often we miss the involvement of divine hand in all that happens in our lives, and so we miss the great purpose of this great gift of life. Daniel was a man of God. He was a man of prayer. He was gifted, well favored, skillful in all wisdom, cunning in knowledge, special knowledge in science and the ability to stand in king’s palace (Dan.1: 4). But he never took any credit for any of these qualifications. He always exalted the name of the Lord in and through everything he could do. And God had a definite purpose for Daniel’s life, for which, He made him go through several process that would prepare and strengthen him for same.

One of them was being cast into lion’s den. As Daniel was being preferred above the princes and was appointed to be set him over the whole realm by the king of this world, the Lord God allowed a den to be prepared for him, not to destroy him but to lift him up to higher realm in order to fulfil the greater purpose. Later, as we all know, Daniel came out of the lion’s den without any harm. But let us ponder upon those factors which distinguished him to be considered worthy by the Lord to be delivered that caused God’s glory.

  1. Opinion of princes and presidents : They sought to find occasion against Daniel concerning the kingdom but could not find any, for Daniel was faithful and no error was found in him (Dan.6:4). When a friend tries to find a fault in a person, its tough as they often ignore or overlook the faults and errors of persons whom they love. But its not so when the people who are always critical tries to find fault. They somehow mange to pick up at least one, even if there might be none. In Daniel’s case, the presidents and the princes were chasing him to find a fault, and yet they could not find one. This shows how perfect Daniel was. God told Abraham “I am the Almighty God; walk before me and be thou perfect.’’ As long as we are in this flesh and blood, we will encounter imperfectness, but yet striving towards perfectness is the Godly attitude. The world around saw perfectness in Daniel, yet God desired to see more of His perfectness in him. The world prepared a den to destroy the perfect man, but God changed it into a divine fire purifying and preparing His servant to bring into fulfilment His perfect plan.
  2. Opinion of the king : 6:16, ‘’So the king gave the command, and they brought Daniel and cast him into the den of lions. But the king spoke, saying to Daniel, “Your God, whom you serve continually, He will deliver you.” The King was literally forced to sign the decree to send any person who would ask any petition of any god or man  to lion’s den . Though his heart favored Daniel in every way, he was helpless. He realized that his earthly power was not enough to deliver him from the snare of the wicked men around. When a God’s child is put in a trial, He himself removes all the earthly help and rescue in order to manifest His own mighty hands of great deliverance. The king saw the Lord whom Daniel served continually. Daniel being a man of prayer, was reported of praying in his own house, against the decree of the king. Daniel served God through prayers and his character definitely represented the Godly character. This gave the king the great confidence that the Lord of Daniel would deliver him.
  3. Opinion of Daniel : Daniel came out of the lion’s den without any harm. When the king called out to him with a lamentable voice, fearing what would have happened to Daniel, he replied with a great joy. He said that he was found innocent before God and the king. Innocent is being free of all blames. Only the one who is washed with the blood of Jesus is considered righteous and blameless before God. God called David a man after His own heart. Hence, though David stumbled in many areas of his life, he soon returned to God and found much favor in His eyes. An innocent heart always aspires to please the Lord. When the decree was written against Daniel, he did not complain or murmur against God. He trusted Him so much so that it did not disturb even his regular prayer times. Nor did he blame or fear the kings and authorities of the land. Hence he opened his windows to face towards Jerusalem to pray as usual as per the law. An innocent heart does not blame God nor anyone else for the things happening in one’s life. Instead he or she sees the divine hand and intervention in everything. The only thing Daniel feared was God’s holiness.

The angel of the Lord kept the mouths of the lions closed. Daniel’s faith was tested and he came out without any harm. Dan.6:25-28, ‘’Then King Darius wrote: To all peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in all the earth: Peace be multiplied to you.26 I make a decree that in every dominion of my kingdom men must tremble and fear before the God of Daniel. For He is the living God, And steadfast forever; His kingdom is the one which shall not be destroyed, And His dominion shall endure to the end. 27 He delivers and rescues, And He works signs and wonders In heaven and on earth, Who has delivered Daniel from the [i]power of the lions. 28 So this Daniel prospered in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.’’ Daniel’s deliverance caused the whole nation to tremble at the name of the Lord. It caused the king Darius to write a decree exalting the name of the Lord God.

From the very next chapter, we read about Daniel  seeing visions and dreams that has revealed even the times of the end days of this world. Earlier, Daniel would interpret the dreams but now he himself was uplifted in the spiritual realm into deeper things of the Lord.  Daniel was tested and fine tuned for this great purpose.

If we have been put into a lion’s den, let us realise that the One who has allowed us to be put in this will safely bring us out, provided, we continue to trust Him and yearn to do what He wants us to do.  The people could put Daniel in lion’s den but they could not open it’s mouth and harm him. Its true that  weapons might be allowed to be formed against us, but none will ever prosper for their control is in our Lord’s hands. So let’s be encouraged to continue to pray earnestly to see His glory.

 God bless us all.
